Rodent Control - Mice & Rats: Quick Answers

The questions we get asked most about rodent control - mice & rats.

What makes rats harder to deal with than mice?

Rats are bigger, more cautious and far more wary of anything new, so they avoid traps a mouse would walk straight into. They also need a smaller opening than people expect, and they reuse the same routes, which is what we use against them.

Why does a rodent problem get worse in autumn?

Rodents move indoors when temperatures drop and outdoor food runs short. Mice fit through a gap the width of a pencil, so they are usually getting in through openings nobody would ever notice. Sealing those is what stops it repeating.

Is it enough to just set traps?

No. Traps only take the animals currently inside, and new ones arrive if the entry points stay open. We treat rodents as an exclusion problem: find and seal the openings, remove what is there, then clear the nesting material and droppings.

Do you use poison for rodents?

Not as a first answer. Rodenticide inside a home risks odour problems and can poison pets and wildlife secondhand. We use trapping and exclusion first, and only discuss bait where a situation genuinely calls for it, and we will tell you when that is the case.
